The Department of Economics at Tsinghua University was founded in 1926 and came under the leadership of Professor Chen Daisun, grandmaster of economics in China, in 1928. The present Department of Economics at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management (SEM) has inherited that fine tradition. Its faculty team has strong research capabilities, which are actively growing in line with international standards. Tsinghua SEM ranked first on the Chinese mainland in the global ranking of academic papers published in economics by Tilburg University in 2011.
Our program trains senior economics researchers to have a solid and broad theoretical foundation, systematic and in-depth professional knowledge of economic disciplines, the ability to skillfully apply modern economics research methods to conduct innovative research, and to effectively engage in teaching economics and researching frontier issues in related fields in universities and research institutions after graduation. The program includes two primary disciplines: theoretical economics and applied economics.
Research Areas
Microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative economics, finance, public finance, industrial economics, and international economics.
Curriculum
-Basic Training in Economics
Our program actively teaches economics and will be integrated with Chinese practice and international standards. In addition to basic course training, there are more than 50 specialized elective courses for students to choose, each of which provides comprehensive knowledge preparation for future research work.
-Research Training
Our program focuses on training research-oriented doctoral students. After completing the basic and specialized courses, all Ph.D. students undergo rigorous dissertation training and complete dissertations at a high academic level under the guidance of their supervisors. Frequent seminars and research assistantships ensure that Ph.D. students can conduct in-depth research work when they are exposed to frontier issues in economics research.
Faculty
Our department has many senior professors who have taught at home and abroad, as well as distinguished professors and visiting professors from overseas research universities. We invite renowned scholars from abroad to offer short courses every year. All these efforts enable our professors to continuously broaden our research frontiers and introduce the latest theories and methods into our training of doctoral students.
Academic Research
Our program strives to create a good academic climate and provides support for academic research. In addition to exchange and cooperation with professors, there is a concentration of outstanding graduates from top universities nationwide that promotes mutual learning and progress. SEM encourages students to actively participate in international and domestic academic conferences, including weekly presentations and seminars, regular doctoral seminars, and international academic conferences (including development economics, macroeconomics, public finance, international economics, econometrics, micro theory, and behavioral economics seminars) held annually and with the participation of famous scholars from home and abroad. Our program also offers numerous opportunities for overseas study. Research platforms such as the China Economic and Social Data Center, the China Institute of Finance and Taxation, and the Center for International Economic Studies actively support Ph.D. students in their research.
