Marketing

The doctoral program in Marketing is committed to cultivating the best marketing scholars in China. The Marketing Department at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management (SEM) was established in June 2004 as one of the three units split from the original Department of Corporate Administration. Tsinghua SEM is eligible to grant the postdoctoral station and doctoral degree in the level-one discipline of business administration: The Department of Marketing can directly recruit post-doctoral students and doctoral students. In addition, Tsinghua SEM is a constituent unit of the level-one state key discipline of business administration.

Research Areas

There are three research areas in the Department of Marketing, namely quantitative modeling, consumer behavior and marketing strategy. Our research covers various fields such as big-data marketing, online marketing, retail management, channel management, brand management, and integrated marketing. Our department welcomes students with a strong interest in academic research in marketing. We encourage prospective students to contact the faculty to learn more about their research and department in general.

Faculty

Among the full-time faculty in our department, eight obtained their doctoral degrees abroad, and all have experience with teaching or visiting abroad. Several have received international and national research awards. Overall, the Department of Marketing at Tsinghua SEM offers a leading doctoral program both domestically and internationally.

Curriculum

Compared with other domestic doctoral programs in marketing, our program offers the best curriculum and training design, which is in line with most distinguished doctoral programs in business schools abroad. Our curriculum is tailor made for the three different areas (quantitative marketing, consumer behavior and marketing strategy) and offers one of the most comprehensive marketing doctoral courses in China.

Academic Research

Our research has several important features: we offer a high-standard research platform; members of our faculty chair research projects funded by national level and various other levels of ministries; they actively publish research in the field’s top journals. In particular, our faculty have published in top journals such as Management Science, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Management World [in Chinese], and Journal of Management Science [in Chinese]. In 2005, the first academic journal in the field of marketing in China, Journal of Marketing Science (JMS), was initiated by the Department of Marketing at Tsinghua SEM and co-sponsored by the Department of Marketing at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management. The journal has since become one the most distinguished in domestic marketing academia. The editorial department of the Journal of Marketing Science is located in the Department of Marketing at Tsinghua SEM.

Placements

Over the years, our department has cultivated many outstanding doctoral graduates and postdoctoral fellows. Our alumni are working in numerous first-class universities in China, such as Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, University of International Business and Economics, Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing Institute of Technology, and China University of Political Science and Law. Some of our distinguished alumni also serve as deans, heads of department and other important positions. In addition, our outstanding alumni, Songting Dong, was offered a faculty position at the Australian National University upon graduation in 2009. Songting is the first person offered a faculty position at an outstanding international research university in China’s marketing academia.
